Remembering Marjie Manley (1938-2019)
Marjie Manley is fondly remembered throughout the London District and beyond as a loyal and dedicated Unitarian. She was a regular attender at Unitarian services for seven decades, a singer in the LDPA Choir and a member of Newington Green Unitarian Church for over 70 years. She was also a regular attender at Golders Green and Stratford services and charitable and other special events over many years.
Marjie’s funeral will take place at Manor Park Crematorium, East London, at 12 noon on Friday 19 July. All her Unitarian friends will be very warmly welcome. The crematorium is a few minutes’ walk from Manor Park Station (London Overground).
Marjie was a generous supporter of several charities, including Animal Free Research UK. It is therefore appropriate that her memory should be honoured by a Marjie Manley Cancer Appeal for non-animal cancer research carried out by Animal Free Research UK, which funds research into breast, prostrate and skin cancer and brain tumours. Among the charity's patrons are Dame Judi Dench, Joanna Lumley and the Queen guitarist Brian May.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women and it has been predicted that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with this disease during the course of their lifetime. Treatment may involve traumatic surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or hormone treatment. Over 11,000 individuals die each year from breast cancer in the UK alone.
An internationally known breast cancer specialist, Dr Valerie Speirs, professor of experimental pathology and oncology at the University of Aberdeen, is leading a three-year study funded by the charity which will focus on the potential causes of breast cancer. It will specifically examine the impact of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), found in materials like pesticides, metals, additives and contaminants in food and personal care products.
By supporting this appeal funding vital humane breast research by Professor Valerie Speirs you will not only be honouring Marjie’s memory but helping to save human and animal lives.
If you wish to send a donation in her memory please either donate online or send your cheque, made out to Animal Free Research UK, to: Marjie Manley Cancer Appeal, Animal Free Research UK, Portmill House, Portmill Lane, Hitchin, Hertfordshire SG5 1DJ. Thank you.
This appeal is in the spirit of our 2015 General Assembly resolution encouraging humane medical research. Since our Unitarian Dahar Keable Humane Research Fund was launched in 2016 £25,562 has been donated by UK Unitarians to Animal Free Research UK, mainly to the charity’s cancer and diabetes appeals.
